Learners will soon be allowed to drive on the motorway!

On June 4th qualified driving instructors will be allowed to take learner drivers on the motorway for the first time ever.

Currently new drivers can opt to do the pass plus scheme once they have passed their test to get more practice on motorways, however, this new law will allow qualified driving instructors to take students in a dual controlled car onto the motorway. This new law will come into place on June 4th and will be for learners in England, Wales and Scotland.

These changes are being made to allow learners to get a broader driving experience before taking their test and to help them with joining and leaving the motorway, as well as changing lanes. It also allows learners to experience driving at high speeds and helps them understand motorway signs and what to do if you break down.

Transport secretary Chris Grayling said about the new plans: “Younger drivers are up to seven times more likely to be killed or seriously injured compared with drivers over 25, and lack of experience is an important factor.

“Allowing learners to drive on motorways in a supportive environment will help them develop a practical understanding of how to use motorways safely before driving independently.”
