How to Check Your Car for a Summer Road Trip

Summer is the perfect time for a road trip. Whether you're planning a beach getaway or exploring the countryside, it's essential to ensure that your car is ready for the journey. Performing a thorough check before hitting the road will help prevent any unexpected breakdowns and ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here's a guide on how to check your car for a summer road trip.

How To Check Your Car

1. Fluid Levels

Check all the essential fluid levels in your car:

  • Engine Oil: Ensure that the oil level is within the recommended range. If it's low or due for a change, get it topped up or replaced.
  • Coolant: Check the coolant level to help prevent overheating. Make sure it's at the appropriate level and the right ratio of coolant to water.
  • Brake Fluid: Verify the brake fluid level and top it up if needed. Low brake fluid can affect braking performance and safety.
  • Power Steering Fluid: Check the power steering fluid level and top it up if necessary. Proper power steering function is crucial for easy manoeuvrability.

2. Tyres

Your tyres are the foundation of your car's performance and safety. Check the following:

  • Tyre Pressure: Ensure that all tyres are properly inflated, including the spare tyre. Low tyre pressure can lead to reduced fuel efficiency and increased risk of blowouts, especially in hot weather.
  • Tread Depth: Check the tread depth to ensure there is sufficient grip. A tread depth gauge or even a penny can be used to check if the tread is worn beyond the recommended limit.
  • Tyre Condition: Inspect the tyres for any bulges, cuts or signs of uneven wear. Damaged or worn-out tyres should be replaced immediately for optimal safety.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to check your tyres – if in any doubt, book in at your local Sandicliffe centre to get them checked!

3. Air Conditioning (AC) System

The summer heat can be brutal, especially during long drives. Make sure your car's AC system is functioning properly:

  • Airflow and Temperature: Turn on the AC and check if the airflow is consistent and the temperature drops as expected. Any signs of weak airflow or warm air may indicate a problem with the system.
  • Coolant Levels: Ensure that the AC coolant levels are sufficient. Low levels can result in reduced cooling performance. If the levels are low, have the system recharged by a professional.
  • Air Filter: Check and clean or replace the cabin air filter if necessary. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and impact the efficiency of the AC system.

AC is not part of a regular service so if you need your AC checked, then book with Sandicliffe

4. Battery Health

Hot summer temperatures can put a strain on your car's battery. Take these steps to ensure it's in good condition:

  • Clean the Terminals: Check the battery terminals for any corrosion. If you spot any build-up, clean it using a wire brush to ensure a good connection.
  • Test the Battery: Consider having a professional test your battery. They can check its overall health and let you know if it might need replacement soon.

Any Sandicliffe centre would be happy to book you in to test your battery.

5. Brake Inspection

Your car's braking system plays a vital role in your safety. Here's what to look out for:

  • Brake Pads and Rotors: Check the brake pads and rotors for wear. If they appear thin or damaged, it's best to have them replaced.
  • Brake Fluid: Inspect the brake fluid level and colour. If it looks dark or contaminated, it may be time for a brake fluid flush.

6. Lights and Signals

Ensure that all lights and signals on your vehicle are working properly:

  • Headlights, Brake Lights, and Indicators: Test each light to ensure they're working. Replace any bulbs that have burned out.

7. Wiper Blades and Washer Fluid

Maintain clear visibility during your trip with properly functioning wiper blades and an ample supply of washer fluid:

  • Wiper Blades: Check the condition of your wiper blades. If they're worn or leave streaks on the windshield, replace them.
  • Washer Fluid: Fill up the windshield washer fluid reservoir, and consider keeping an extra bottle in your trunk.

If you need to replace your wiper blades, get in touch with your local Sandicliffe Parts department.

Safe travels and enjoy your summer adventure!
