The latest revolutionary engine by Mazda – the Skyactiv-X – redefines the meaning of driving. Using Mazda-patented Skyactiv technology called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI), the Skyactiv-X engine achieves more power, more efficiency and fewer emissions.
We like to think of it as the perfect equilibrium between petrol and diesel engines. An equilibrium that carmakers from around the world have been trying to generate for over two decades, but only Mazda could bring into existence. This is the power of X.
“We have pledged to build a future in which we can coexist with the bountiful, beautiful earth by applying a well-to-wheel philosophy to achieve substantive cuts to carbon dioxide emissions...” Masamichi Kogai, President & CEO, MazdaRegister Test Drive Interest
The 2.0-litre Skyactiv-X engine is the most powerful Mazda engine to date and the most ground-breaking engine in the world. With a horsepower of 178bhp and 244Nm of torque - 30% more torque than the current 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G – the Skyactiv-X distributes ground-breaking performance at every turn of the wheel.
A Skyactiv-X engine is up to 30% more fuel efficient than Mazda’s current Skyactiv-G engine (gasoline engine). The Skyactiv-X engine returns 52.3mpg on a combined cycle and emits 99g/km of CO2 emissions. But most importantly, it has been engineered to be effective in the real world.
The Skyactiv-X comes as a six-speed auto or six-speed manual engine but whichever you choose, you must prepare for instant driving pleasure. From the very moment your foot meets the pedal, your Skyactiv-X engine “pulls like a turbodiesel, but revs like a normally aspirated gasoline engine”.
Don’t worry about having to drive differently or taking alternative precautions when driving a Skyactiv-X engine. On the surface, the Skyactiv-X is just like any other Mazda gasoline engine. Sit back, relax and let the power of X do the work for you.
When designing the Skyactiv-X, it was important to ensure it was being built for the future. For that reason, it is companionable with Electric Vehicles. It is capable of working in hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, ready for when you decide to go electric.
The question on everyone’s mind, and rightfully so. The answer: a carefully constructed pioneering technology called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI).
Spark Controlled Compression Ignition is the process which compresses the engine’s fuel-air mixture at a considerably higher compression ratio with a very lean mix. It does this whilst running on regular gasoline.
The Skyactiv-X engine will then send a spark to ignite a small share of the fuel-air mixture which results in a flare of temperature and pressure forcing the rest of the fuel-air mixture to ignite - similar to the workings of a diesel engine. This leads to quicker and purer burning of the air-fuel mixture compared to other conventional engines.
We know what you’re thinking – how can an engine be more economical but produce more power? Mazda answers this with an extremely lean mix of air and petrol. You see, a normal gasoline engine uses a fuel-air mixture of 14.7:1 ratio. When using SPCCI, the fuel-air mix inside the Skyactiv-X works out to be an incredible ratio of 40:1. It is this Skyactiv-X compression ratio that makes the engine’s fuel-air mixture is so lean.
In simple terms, the Skyactiv-X uses more air and less fuel to deliver more power and less emissions. The ultimate result is that the Skyactiv-X takes all the good from a petrol engine and all the good from a diesel engine and merges it to create an experience that is both powerful and economical at the same time.
