Green number plates will be introduced across the UK alongside a £12 million EV research investment for a greener future.
Jun 18, 2020
The green plate project has been put into place to encourage drivers to make the switch from conventional, higher emission diesel and petrol vehicles to zero-emission electric vehicles. The reasoning behind the initiative is to help local authorities easily identify electric vehicles as and when new incentivising policies are actioned.
For example, more and more low-emission zones are popping up across cities in the UK – the new green number plates would make the eligible parties instantly distinguishable from those that may have to pay an entry fee.
Other schemes include free parking or lower fare parking for those who own an electric vehicle – here green plates would make it easy to identify which vehicle is eligible for free parking and which is not.
Now when we say green plates, what we mean is a green flash on the left-hand side like so:
Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, said:
“A green recovery is key to helping us achieve our net zero carbon commitments while also promoting economic growth.
Green number plates could unlock a number of incentives for drivers and increase awareness of cleaner vehicles on our roads, showing people that a greener transport future is within our grasp.
We’re supporting small businesses to develop the transport tech of the future through a multi-million-pound investment, ensuring that UK businesses remain at the forefront of low carbon innovation and research.’’
What's more, £12 million in funding will be dedicated to ground-breaking research into zero-emission technology to build on the electric vehicle market and increase the development of greener vehicles and vehicle charging innovation. This has been made possible thanks to the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in association with Innovate UK and has lead to a new Zero Emission Vehicle Innovation Competition which invites applicants 'to bid for project funding to support advancements in both battery-electric and hydrogen vehicles as well as charging infrastructure'.
But that's not all, small and medium businesses around the UK will also receive £2 million from OLEV to help support their research revolving zero-emission vehicles, EV battery technology and more. The aim is to then help major vehicle manufacturers with their EV production in the future.
It's a brilliant move by all involved as not only will it drive more and more people to go electric but it will boost local economic growth 'through research and development projects in areas including charging infrastructure' and electric vehicles, in turn, creating over 60,000 skilled jobs.
