Sport Relief in Leicester

Find out what fundraising events are taking place in Leicester for Sport Relief, so that you can do your bit for the charity in your local area.

Mar 11, 2016

Sport Relief is back, from 18th-20th March 2016, with sporting events taking place across the UK - and Leicester is no exception. From large organised marathons, to individual challenges, there’s plenty of opportunities to get involved in the Sport Relief fundraising buzz within Leicester. All money raised will be donated to help transform the lives of disadvantaged communities in the UK and around the world. So if you’re looking for ways to take part, keep reading to learn about what’s going on in your local area.

Walk/Run for Sport Relief

A favourite for Sport Relief, organised runs and marathons are a fantastic way to raise money at scale while also bringing the community together for a fun-filled day out. How you approach a charity run is up to you; whether you want to beat the time record, do it wearing the craziest fancy dress costume or walk it at your own pace.

In Leicester, there are lots of organised marathons going on for Sport Relief. Some of the most popular routes close to Leicester city include The Oadby Mile, Leicester Forest RFC Mile, The Fleckney Mile and the Carlton Mile. All take place on the 20th March and include live entertainment on the day, from a pub BBQ to live music and refreshments – so there’s fun to be had for all the family. All routes give the choice of running for 1, 3 or 6 miles and offer tickets for adults, children and families (groups). Take your pick and get training!

Swim for Sport Relief

If running isn’t really your thing, there will be some ‘swimathons’ held across Leicester that you can get involved in for Sport Relief. Examples include the swimathon at Braunston Leisure Centre, Aylestone Leisure Centre, Parksland Leisure Centre and Wigston Pool and Fitness Centre – all running from 18th-20th March.

You can choose to sign up for one of these Sport Relief events individually, or in a team of 2-5 people. Don’t worry about being a strong or experienced swimmer either; these fundraising events accommodate all experience levels to make them fun for all. However, you will be expected to specify how long you’ll be swimming for; between 1.5K, 2.5k or 5k.

Cycle for Sport Relief

This year, there aren’t any organised Sport Relief cycle events in Leicester, but the nearest one is in Sheffield. The Sheffield Flagship Family Cycle takes place on 20th March and starts between 11am and 12 noon. Adults, children and groups are all welcome to take part in this fundraising cycle, which takes you on a 3 mile ride on the same circuit as the UK Grand Prix!

After you have completed the 3 miles, refreshments and fun family activities will be going on at the Event Village.

Can’t attend an organised Sport Relief fundraising event?

There are other ways to do your bit for Sport Relief. You can sign up on the Sport Relief website for ‘Simply Cycle’ or ‘Simply Swim’ to register your own fundraising event. All you have to do is decide on the distance (to be completed in one go), purchase a ticket(s) online and complete your Sport Relief challenge between 9th March and 30th April 2016.

Preparing for your Sport Relief challenge

There’s still time to train for your Sport Relief fundraising event, whether that’s running, cycling or swimming. The recommended way to tackle this is to do jogging, cycling or swimming sessions 3-4 times a week – incrementally increasing your distance and time with each day.

If it isn’t convenient to train outdoors, why not use the facilities at your local gym? PureGym Leicester on Walnut Street is open 24 hours a day and has various indoor cycling, treadmills, ascent trainer and cross trainer equipment, as well as experienced trainers who can advise you on your Sport Relief training.

As an extra incentive from Sandicliffe, we are currently offering Ford, Kia, Nissan, Skoda and Mazda servicing offers for PureGym Leicester members. Get a Sandicliffe 40-point interim service for only £99, or a 70-point major service for only £199. To enquire about this offer, call Susanna Holt on 07891 810032.
