SHOCK REVEAL: Mazda MX-30 Petrol Hybrid Introduced To Line-Up

On Friday 31st July at the Automobile Council near Tokyo, Mazda introduced the MX-30 Mild Hybrid equipped with the brand’s e-Skyactiv-G engine. In other words, a petrol hybrid system identical to that of the Mazda3 M Hybrid released earlier this year.

The shock reveal comes as a surprise to the 3,000 invited guests and thousands more around the world as we were once under the impression that the Mazda MX-30 would be a 1-of-1 line-up consisting of the 100% electric SUV, but plans seem to have changed with this latest addition.

The MX-30 M Hybrid will combine the direct injection gasoline engine we know as the Skyactiv-G 2.0 with the Japanese manufacturer’s unique M Hybrid system to provide a quieter, smoother driving experience with enhanced fuel efficiency compared to a non-hybrid.

The model will be offered as an All-Wheel-Drive and will be available to order later this year, beating its all-electric sibling to the road which is set for an early 2021 delivery.

In terms of design, the MX-30 M Hybrid sits identical to the All-Electric MX-30, featuring the same suicide doors and forward-thinking style that puts it at the top of anything Mazda has produced so far. The model was showcased in the brand's signature Soul Red.

With everything going on, the event was close to being cancelled after already being postponed twice, but in line with current government guidelines, guests were allowed in the venue with masks where social distancing was imposed as well as temperature checks at the venue’s entrance.

Mazda’s Head of Design, Ikuo Maeda, said, “It was touch and go there for a while with another potential event postponement on the cards, but we are ecstatic to finally be able to reveal the hybrid MX-30.”
