MG Celebrates Triple Success at the WhatCar? Awards 2026

MG is celebrating a fantastic triple victory at the What Car? Electric Car Awards 2026, with three models taking top honours in their respective categories.
The awards recognise the best hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric cars on the market, with What Car?’s expert team assessing models across 15 categories using real-world testing. This year, MG has come away with three category wins, highlighting the breadth of its electrified range.
The winning models are:
MG4 EV Urban – Best Electric Small Car
MG HS PHEV – Best Hybrid Family SUV
MGS9 PHEV – Best Hybrid 7-Seat SUV
For drivers considering making the switch to electrified motoring, the awards demonstrate that there are options across a variety of lifestyles – from compact city cars to practical family SUVs and spacious seven-seaters.
MG4 EV Urban named Best Electric Small Car
The MG4 EV Urban has taken the title of Best Electric Small Car, following its UK launch in March 2026.
Combining efficiency, performance, affordability and practicality, the compact electric hatchback offers space for up to five people and their luggage. What Car? Editor Steve Huntingford praised the MG4 EV Urban for offering the practicality many drivers want from a small car without requiring a significant increase in budget.
The MG4 EV Urban is available in Comfort and Premium trim levels, with standard and long-range battery options providing between 201 and 258 miles of WLTP combined range. Prices in the supplied press release range from £23,495 to £27,995.
For drivers looking for an electric car that is compact enough for everyday urban driving while still offering useful space and range, the MG4 EV Urban makes a compelling case.
MG HS PHEV wins Best Hybrid Family SUV for the second year running
The MG HS PHEV has successfully defended its title as Best Hybrid Family SUV, making it a winner in the category for the second consecutive year.
The plug-in hybrid SUV combines a smooth and efficient hybrid powertrain with an electric-only range of up to 75 miles, alongside a spacious interior and generous standard specification.
What Car? highlighted the MG HS PHEV’s keen pricing, long electric range and well-rounded driving experience, making it an appealing option for both private buyers and company car drivers.
The MG HS PHEV is available in SE and Trophy trim levels, with prices in the supplied release ranging from £32,495 to £34,995.
For families who want the flexibility of electric driving for everyday journeys, combined with the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer trips, a plug-in hybrid can offer a versatile solution.
MGS9 PHEV takes Best Hybrid 7-Seat SUV
Completing MG's hat-trick is the MGS9 PHEV, which has been named Best Hybrid 7-Seat SUV.
The award is particularly notable because the MGS9 is MG’s first seven-seat model in the large SUV category, making its immediate success following its UK launch an impressive achievement.
The MGS9 PHEV offers an electric-only range of up to 62 miles, allowing drivers to complete many everyday journeys using electric power, while its 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine provides additional flexibility for longer trips.
Inside, there are three rows of seats to accommodate the whole family. With the third row folded away, the MGS9 PHEV offers 1,026 litres of boot space, giving drivers plenty of room for luggage, shopping and family essentials.
The MGS9 PHEV is available in Comfort and Premium trims, with prices in the supplied release starting from £34,210.
Three awards, one electrified MG range
MG’s triple success at the What Car? Electric Car Awards underlines just how varied the manufacturer’s electrified line-up has become.
From the compact MG4 EV Urban, through to the family-focused MG HS PHEV and spacious MGS9 PHEV, there’s an electrified MG designed to meet different needs.
According to MG Director of Product and Planning David Allison, more than 91% of MG’s new car sales now feature an electrified powertrain, whether hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric.
That gives customers more choice when it comes to deciding how they want to drive into the future – whether that means going fully electric or choosing a hybrid or plug-in hybrid for added flexibility.
