MOT

When To MOT

Once your vehicle reaches 3 years old you will need to have an MOT test annually.

The MOT is a thorough safety test which also checks your vehicles exhaust emission levels.

Without a valid MOT certificate you are breaking the law and will be unable to purchase car insurance or road tax. It is the owner’s responsibility to have your vehicle MOT’d every 12 months.

Sandicliffe are approved MOT testers and are accredited by VOSA, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency. We can test your car according to the specified MOT criteria and either pass your vehicle as safe, or not. The MOT assessment is based on the condition of the car on the day it comes into us. We will also inform you of any ‘advisory’ issues, which have passed the test this time but will need to be considered in the future.

You can have your vehicle MOT tested 28 days in advance of the date which it is due. Your MOT is valid for 12 months from the expiry date of the previous certificate.

When you book in for your MOT test with us, there are two things you need to remember to bring with you on the day:

  • Your V5 document - your Vehicle Registration
  • A means of paying the current MOT fee.

You don’t have to wait until your existing MOT has expired before booking in for your next one.

Your MOT can be carried out 28 days in advance of when it is due to expire. In this instance you will need to remember to bring your most recent MOT certificate with you.

Unfortunately your vehicle will not always meet the necessary legal requirements. If your car fails the MOT it must be repaired to ensure it meets the required standard. Once the MOT has been carried out we will explain any repairs to you, if necessary. Notes made on the back of the test report are also made to help you.

You can appeal against your nominated MOT testers decision should you feel this has been unfair. You can request a VT17 form which will explain the steps you need to take.

When necessary repairs on your vehicle have been carried out, we can then do a re-test.

There are two instances in which you will not pay for an MOT re-test outlined by VOSA. Firstly you will not pay for a re-test if the vehicle is left for repairs and a re-test at the same testing station and does not leave the garage in-between.

Secondly, your re-test will be free of charge if your vehicle fails for one or more items on the following list (however you must return your vehicle for the re-test by no later than the end of the next working day):

  • Bonnet
  • Boot lid
  • Brake pedal anti-slip device
  • Direction indicators
  • Doors
  • Drop-sides
  • Fuel Filler Cap
  • Hazard Warning
  • Horn
  • Lamps
  • Loading door
  • Mirrors
  • Rear reflectors
  • Registration plates
  • Seat belts
  • Seats
  • Sharp edges or projections
  • Steering wheel
  • Tailboard
  • Tailgate
  • Tyres*
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Windscreen and glass
  • Windscreen washer and wipers
  • Wheels*

* Not applicable to motorcycles and side cars

If your vehicle fails the exhaust emissions test due to defective components it may not be necessary to replace the complete exhaust system.

We would advise you to have the exhaust components checked at Sandicliffe before you bring in your vehicle for its MOT test.
