50 Years on Welford Road

Wednesday 27th June 2007

Car mechanic Pete Marshall, one of the longest-serving employees of the Sandicliffe Motor Group, is celebrating this month after reaching the milestone of fixing cars in Leicester for a full half-century.

The locally-born mechanic has spent all 50 years working on Welford Road, at a dealership which had already changed hands four times when it was acquired by Sandicliffe Motors in 1987. Pete, who turns 66 this year, is now one of the longest-serving Ford professionals in the whole of the UK.

Sandicliffe Motor Group’s Managing Director Reg Tutt, said:

“We’d like to send Pete our heartiest congratulations. He has been incredibly loyal, not only to us, but to the motor industry as a whole. To have spent so long at the same dealership is a remarkable achievement.”

On his achievement, Pete said:

“Sandicliffe has been very good to me. I have enjoyed all my time here, and have always got on with my colleagues. I’ve certainly seen a lot of changes in my time. Cars these days are much more complicated than they used to be and involve sophisticated electronics throughout. Fifty years ago their mechanics were much simpler and repairing them often just involved a monkey wrench, rather than the computerised systems we have today!”

Leicester-born and raised, Pete spent much of his long career as a mechanic and car technician, but is now prefers life in the driving seat working part-time delivering cars to new customers.

Pete lives with his wife Pat. The couple have two children and four grandchildren. “I have always been a family man and a company – and Sandicliffe has always been a family company. Perhaps that’s why I’ve lasted so long!”

Sandicliffe Motor Group is one of the county’s largest Ford Retailers, now with a total of 10 dealerships in the East Midlands plus Mazda, Suzuki, Kia, Fiat, Chevrolet and servicing for MG Rovers owners.
